sfMax returns with a presentation by Philip Mantione and Simon Mehalek, currently collaborating on a multimedia, robotic piece called Prometheus. Mantione’s music and Mehalek’s robots take center stage for an evening that is sure to delight anyone looking at the intersection of art and science.

Mantione’s music has been described as “austerely impressive” (Paris Transatlantic Monthly) and Innova Recordings calls his Sinusoidal Tendencies, “a searing study in form and color.” Zane Fischer, of the Santa Fe Reporter, called his interactive sound sculpture, “…a satisfying, interactive rabbit hole, in which tactility becomes sound.” He’ll be presenting music created using Max/MSP, demonstrating custom patches, and interactive device that uses photocells and the MIDITRON. Simon Mehalek is the resident rogue scientist at the Santa Fe Complex that specializes in robotics, computer science, chemistry, and mathematics. He has completed several ground-breaking robotic projects at institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, MIT, UNM, John Hopkins University and at his private research facility, Mehalek Laboratory. He’ll be demonstrating Prometheus, a work in progess that will use the Arduino microcontroller and custom circuitry to control robotics, video, sound, and capture sensor data.
