Swarmfest 2009 is coming to the Complex on June 28-30. SwarmFest, the leading international conference to advance agent-based modeling, is an informal and interdisciplinary reunion for anyone interested in advancing the use of agent-based modeling systems. It’s a discussion-based, problem-question oriented, workshop-like environment that is also non-denominational: users of Repast, NetLogo and even FORTRAN are welcome. Prior SWARMFests were held in Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, DePaul University, Notre Dame, Torino, Italy and the University of Michigan. more…

Christopher Voight says we can program cells by combining commands encoded in their DNA. He visits the Complex on June 16 in the next q-bios public lecture series to discuss the beginnings of a programming language for bacteria that he is developing at the University of San Fransisco’s Voight Labs and how it can be applied to problems in energy, materials, and drug production. more…
Year Two Begins with the Flip of a Switch
The clock slipped past nine as organizer Phil Mantione let the anticipation build until he introduced SF Complex founder Stephen Guerin at 9:20 to flip the switch on a new year at Santa Fe Complex. Dressed in a white lab coat for the occasion, Guerin thanked the attendees for their support and stepped to the FrankenSwitch to animate seven distinct kinetic sculptures, compiled from repurposed mechanical parts and electrical circuitry. more…

FrankenCircuit is a huge fundraising party for Santa Fe Complex on Saturday evening, June 13th, an enormous electric installation organized by Phil Mantione and featuring the work of Martin Back, James Brody, Tristan Chambers, Victoria Hughes, David McPherson, Simon Mehalek, Zevin Polzin, Frank Rolla, Steve Smith, and Alysse Stepanian, brings music and spoken word performances by Vince Kablubek, Flamingo Pink!, and Ismael Retzinsk. But beyond that, there are issues raised by Mary Shelley’s classic tale that are as controversial today as they were 200 years ago. more…

Three reflections on humanity, our technology, and the stories we tell await you on June 10 at the Complex. Scientists Steve Smith and Stephen Guerin, sci-fi novelist Steve Gould and renowned game designer Chris Crawford ponder what does the future hold for humans and the technologies we depend on? While they may not follow David Levy’s predictions of human and robot dalliances, they will consider how tools have moved beyond passive participants in human culture to the active role played by today’s computers and, yes, tomorrow’s robots. One year ago @ the Complex
500 people packed Santa Fe Complex’s new home at 632 Agua Fria last Saturday, June 14. From 4:00 to 7:00, it was an SRO crowd, spilling out into grounds to enjoy the cool breeze as the evening progressed. At 7:00, the audience settled in for a one-hour Noisefold performance and lingered into the evening to savor the experience long after the lights went down on the live show. Exploring Music in Analog Circuitry

Composer David Dunn returns to the Complex on Friday, June 5 to continue the SFMax series and its on-going discussion of the methods, software and hardware used to create interactive audio and video. Dunn, who is currently exploring the autonomous behavior of hyper-chaotic analog audio circuits, will discuss his work. Dunn rarely presents concerts or installations and instead prefers to lecture and engage in site-specific interactions or research-oriented activities. more…
