Design Beyond Human Capabilities
Dr. Richard Gabriel visits the Complex to discuss his work at the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie-Mellon University on building ultra-largescale systems. He received the 2004 AAAI/ACM Allen Newell Award for innovations not only on fundamental issues in programming languages and software design but also on the interaction between computer science and other disciplines, notably architecture and poetry. An accomplished musician, poet and author, Richard will surely extend his comments to a variety of topics.
While Richard is far more likely to introduce himself as a poet and musician than a computer scientist, his background in that field is more relevant to this presentation. He received his doctorate from Stanford and initially worked in artificial intelligence. He is currently a researcher at IBM and worked at Sun Microsystems before that. He was the founder and chief technology officer of a successful LISP company and is active in a variety of efforts to expand and reinvent computer science includins the Feyeraband Project to reinvent computer science and an academic program leading to a master of fine arts in software design.
