SF Alliance Hosts Business Development Workshop

September 29, 2009 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm

The Santa Fe Alliance is proud to have Drew Tulchin, Managing Partner of Social Enterprise Associates present a workshop concerning new, emerging business entities and structures: B Corporations, L3C and stock options for charities. Scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Santa Fe Complex, this is the third in a series of business development workshops sponsored by the New Mexico Community Development Loan Fund for the Santa Fe Alliance.

B Corporations use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. They are unlike traditional businesses as they meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards; institutionalize stakeholder interests and build a collective voice through the power of a unifying brand. Social Enterprise Associates is currently the only registered B Corporation in New Mexico.

A low-profit limited liability company (L3C) is an emerging legal form of business entity in the United States to bridge the gap between non-profit and for-profit investing by providing a structure that facilitates investments in socially beneficial, for-profit ventures while simplifying compliance with Internal Revenue Service rules to allow foundations to invest with “Program Related Investments.”

Providing stock for charities is a new trend whereby business owners set aside a small ownership stake for social entities, like non-profits. The charities benefit when the business is sold or goes public.

These examples will be shared with plenty of time set aside for audience discussion of the greater issue of how business can ‘do well by doing good.’ Drew Tulchin will give specific examples; the benefits of these types of entities; and how to become a B Corporation or L3C. If you or someone you know is doing well by doing good, please come and share that story.

Drew Tulchin is a managing partner with Social Enterprise Associates and defines his career making new ideas reality. His consulting has taken him across the U.S. and to more than 30 countries.
