Nathaniel Bartlett Takes the Marimba to 3-Dimensions
Nathaniel Bartett visits Santa Fe on Saturday January 30 for a virtuoso marimba performance at the Complex. Nathaniel Bartlett has performed all across the US—from Maine to California, Minnesota to Texas—in a wide variety of venues: art galleries, museums, concert halls, dance spaces, warehouses, lofts, multi-purpose art spaces, universities & colleges, etc. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY), the Royal Academy of Music (London), the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and studied privately with marimbist Leigh Howard Stevens.
“My performances seamlessly meld my five-octave acoustic marimba with electronics, a powerful custom computer, and an eight-channel cube of loudspeakers. With the audience positioned in the center of the cuboid loudspeaker array, a three-dimensional soundfield can be projected into the audience space, totally immersing the listeners. In my music the positioning and movement of sounds in physical space, resulting in kinetic audio sculptures, is a central musical parameter. The three-dimensional soundfield is enriched by the use of high-definition audio (superior to CD-quality audio), which allows for a significant increase in sonic nuances.
In my setup, a dual-display computer monitor has replaced the music stand. The music notation, now free from the physical realm, can be totally integrated in real time with the audio parameters of the music.”
