Featuring 15 Video Artists from 10 Countries, Online Performances from Hamburg and Sweden, and Performances by 12 Local Artists

The first anniversary show of Manipulated Image, For Action’s Sake, considers the confluence of art and politics. Direct and indirect references are made to the role of mass media in the present, and its relationship to Machiavellian and Fascistic politics. For Action’s Sake contrasts autotelic individuals with those driven by external influences such as power and comfort, who in the end are left unfulfilled and alienated. Read more

Hey-Yeun Jang of New York City and Martin Back of Santa Fe offer a special presentation and discussion for Manipulated Image #9: GUTTERAL! that includes their work as well as the work of Wilfried Agricola deCologne (Germany), Niclas Hallberg (Sweden), and Paulo R. C. Barros (Brazil). It is not necessarily the grating quality of the sound that makes these works guttural, but the restless audacity of the artists to breech the boundaries of the agreeable, the proper, and the familiar.

Manipulated Image #8: The Moving Still

The Moving Still presents videos by three artists, whose approaches are vastly different yet intrinsically “photographic.” The complex visual studies of James Coker contrast with Latvian artist Krišs Salmanis’s light-hearted and playful animations that utilize photographic stills. A graduate in film studies, Brazilian artist Kika Nicolela has been called a “visual-filmmaker.” The frames of her moving images are composed as if part of long sequences of photographic stills. We will also have the opportunity to hear James Coker speak about his work on this October 30 event and his algorithmic experiments with moving images. Read more

Featuring mobile phone video and indie-animations by Russian collective, Selfburning, videos and interactive Flash web art by Kelly Monico, experimental video by local Andrew Edwards, Moroccan Mohamed Ezoubeiri’s visual slices of life, Fabio Scacchioli’s philosophical experiments based on the function of language, and relationship of object and image, and a virtual tour of Second Life with surprise animations by an artist from Amsterdam. Expect a night of screenings as diverse as music videos to mystery and the philosophical questioning of the meaning of life. Join us for the premiere of a new video by Keep Adding’s Brian Bixby. Brian will discuss past collaborations with LA filmmaker and spatial reconstructionist, Scott Pagano, whose work will also be screened. We will then take a look at London-based artist, Yuko Takemura’s mysterious video tableaux, followed by Gerald Guthrie’s animations, replete with technical mastery, humor, and philosophical depth. Manipulated Image: Live performance by Rand and Rudy, Plus Videos by Miller and O’Finn

New media artist and VJ, Peter Rand, will be showing recent sound films and performing live with special guest Paul Rudy on June 26th at the complex. Screenings will include Dennis H. Miller’s fascinating abstract animations with his musical compositions, and New York artist, Donald O’Finn’s “feverishly edited encyclopedically strange video collages.” Read more

Year Two Begins with the Flip of a Switch

104_104The clock slipped past nine as organizer Phil Mantione let the anticipation build until he introduced SF Complex founder Stephen Guerin at 9:20 to flip the switch on a new year at Santa Fe Complex. Dressed in a white lab coat for the occasion, Guerin thanked the attendees for their support and stepped to the FrankenSwitch to animate seven distinct kinetic sculptures, compiled from repurposed mechanical parts and electrical circuitry. Experimental Video Screening Series

These monthly screenings feature experimental short videos by artists that explore the innovative use of technology and software to manipulate image.
