The Ambient Mirror is a collaboration between international artist, Marie Sester, and Redfish Group @ sfComplex. Stephen Guerin, Simon Mehalek and Cory Strassburger are collaborating with Maria Mendez and Marie Sester to create an intelligent mirror interface for a gallery installation. Viewers of the mirror will be able experience 15-minutes of fame as their faces are tracked in real time and morphed into Andy Warhol’s image.

Collaborative workspaces are the heart of the studio approach at Santa Fe Complex. Santa Fe is home to abundant talent in a variety of fields but, as small entrepreneurs, they tend to work in silos with little integration across or within fields. By offering a third space (the first and second spaces are home and work), sfX creates a dynamic opportunity to expand the impact of to these creative individuals. It is ideally suited to the City’s emphasis on targeted sectors as it encourages collaboration across fields of interest to create expanded opportunities for business development.

Urban Studio/ Roy Wroth
interactive games and maps generate a vision for a new zoning code
The Española downtown revitalization study is funded by a New Mexico State grant. Its objective is to formulate a new zoning code for the downtown district that supports economic development. The diverse heritage of the Española Valley, held in the memories and traditions of the community, are the key to renewing the downtown. The project is developing new game- and map-based tools for residents to share their values, ideas and priorities.
The Digital Palace
Urban Studio/ Roy Wroth
digital reconstruction of the Palace of the Governors as it existed in the 17th century
This project is a collaboration with media arts interns at New Mexico Highlands University, the New Mexico State Office of Archaeology and the Department of Cultural Affairs. The project will produce a component of an exhibit on 17th century Santa Fe, to open in the new History Museum in Fall 2009. The project will include a digital reconstruction of the Palace and its environs, with interactive interpretive elements.
Beyond the exhibit, the team is working with FARO Technologies and Los Alamos paleontologist Ralph Chapman to model the Palace through other time periods with laser scanning technology.
Visible Cities
Urban Studio/ Roy Wroth
a visual wikipedia of Santa Fe from prehistory to the present day hosted in an immersive virtual world
An expansion of the Digital Palace project, Visible Cities will create an interactive platform for amateur and citizen historians to work with historical documents and artifacts. Laser scanning will be used to build an immersive virtual model of the city covering every decade. A semantic database will be used to manage archival resources and user-generated content. Social network tools will support groups of citizen participants.

A dynamic traffic management decision support system for boat traffic circulation in the Venice lagoon.
The Venice Visualization project is sponsored by CIVITAS, a European Union initiative to create cleaner and better transport in cities. (CIVITAS stands for CIty-VITAlity-Sustainability.) With the CIVITAS Initiative, the EC aims to generate a decisive breakthrough by supporting and evaluating the implementation of ambitious integrated sustainable urban transport strategies that should make a real difference for the welfare of the European citizen. Within CIVITAS I (2002-2006) there are 19 cities clustered in 4 demonstration projects, whilst within CIVITAS II (2005-2009) 17 cities in 4 demonstration projects are taking part. These 36 cities all over Europe will be funded by the EU with 100 M € and the overall budget of the Initiative will be more than 300 M.
CIVITAS MOBILIS partners cities of Toulouse (France), Debrecen (Hungary), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Venice (Italy) and Odense (Denmark), and their local mobility stakeholders – strive to create a culture for clean urban mobility in the framework of sustainable development, ensuring involvement of all relevant stakeholders and participation of citizens. MOBILIS aims to implement radical strategies for clean urban transport in all five cities, building on a broad range of policies and instruments. [one of which is] -Enhancing public transport quality and integration with other transport modes substantially (private car, bicycle) through innovative planning and service development.

Three-dimensions are the rage in this fall’s movie line-up. They’re also increasingly important in historical, archeological and paleontological research, as we’ve seen in three prior blenders at Santa Fe Complex. We continue our series on Stereo-Computational Photography with an in-depth look at 3D laser scanning in modern research. Read more
